Develop knowledge about the diversity of the alphabetic code!
Scholastic’s Sound Poems is a set of 45 large-format instructional cards with poems that represent every sound of English.
Together, the rhythmical, rhyming text written by Jill Eggleton, and the simple, age-appropriate activities developed by Joy Allcock help children learn foundational literacy skills and develop knowledge of language, vocabulary, and the diversity of the alphabetic code.
Each set of cards includes:
Guide Card
The first card in the set is a helpful guide on how to use Sound Poems. The front of the card features a guide to all 44 rhymes, one for each sound of English.
The back of the card explains how to use the activities and provides an overview of Joy Allcock’s speech-to-sounds-to-print approach, which allows students to quickly learn the alphabetic code of English.
Sound Poems Cards
The 44 Sound Poems cards include an illustrated poem on the front that gives students the opportunity to listen for the sounds of English in different positions in words. Activities on the back of each card build a variety of foundational literacy skills, including:
- Isolating and pronouncing phonemes
- Segmenting syllables
- Pronouncing the vowel sound in each syllable
- Learning phoneme-grapheme relationships
- Developing knowledge of language including adjectives, verbs, adverbs, pronouns, synonyms, antonyms, punctuation, and contractions
- Oral language skills and vocabulary
- Print knowledge
Digital and Printable Cards
To facilitate interactive and flexible use, digital and printable versions of the Sound Poems cards are available.
