March Break is the perfect time to encourage your kids to continue fostering their love of reading! Here are some fun and effective ways to keep kids engaged and excited about reading during the break:
1. Set a Reading Goal
Give your growing reader a challenge that’s exciting and rewarding. Whether it’s one short story a day, one chapter book for the week, or simply reading as much as they can during their break. Create a chart to track their progress and celebrate each reading milestone with small rewards, like stickers or a special treat.
2. Visit Local Libraries and Bookstores
Take a trip to your local library or bookstore for books to read during the break. Plus, check out any special March Break activities they may be holding throughout the week.
3. Let Them Choose the Books
According to the most recent Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report, 94% of children agree that their favourite books are the ones they pick out themselves. Before heading out to find some new books, ask some questions to gauge their current interests. With these answers in mind, you can pinpoint some books they may add to their all-time favourites.
4. Mix Up the Material
Keep things interesting by encouraging your child to choose a variety of materials. Picture books, graphic novels, poetry, non-fiction, the list can go on. A mix of genres and formats will keep them engaged and excited. Need more ideas? Download and play our Book Bingo Game—challenge the whole family and get into new books!
5. Read in a Cozy Spot
Whether it’s a cozy corner in your living room or a reading fort in your child’s bedroom, creating a reading environment for your kids will inspire them to read and make diving into books even more enjoyable and relaxing.
6. Read Aloud Together
This is a great opportunity to spend time with your kids, while also helping improve their fluency and comprehension. Make the most of your read-aloud time with these tips.
7. Use a Reading Log
Encourage your child to keep track of the books they read using a reading log. Give them a notebook dedicated to everything about what they’re reading—the book title, their favourite parts, their favourite characters, and what they liked about the story. It’ll be a fun thing to look back on when they’ve finished multiple books.
8. Connect Books to Activities
Make reading interactive by relating it to activities, like crafting, cooking, or outdoor adventures. If your child is reading a book about dinosaurs, go on a nature walk and search for “dinosaur footprints”, or create a mini dinosaur reading buddy.
