Interview with the Author of ‘Nish #2’

What inspired you to write your book? / Where did the idea for your book come from?

Isabelle Picard: I organized a student’s exchange 20 years ago in Matimekush, way up North. The students loved my trip. I met amazing, funny, smart kids over there. They, and the territory, inspired me.

What did you enjoy most about writing? What were some challenges that you faced while writing?

Isabelle Picard: When I write about something, it is like if I am there. It is like travelling at no cost. Developing the story, the characters were amazing.

What do you hope your readers will take away from your book?

Isabelle Picard: I hope they will have fun! Also, that they will discover another Canadian territory and different at times, but similar at others, ways of living.

How do you come up with the names for your characters?

Isabelle Picard: From the people I know and I met in my life.

What books have had the biggest impact on your life? / What books were your favourite to read growing up?

Isabelle Picard: I am francophone, so French books. There was none on or about Indigenous people. That is why I am writing about that.

What’s your writing process look like?

Isabelle Picard: I write in the morning in my kitchen. I need some natural light so I have huge windows. I stop around 1 pm. 5 days a week.

What’s next for you?

Isabelle Picard: Starting a new trilogy for kids and also writing a book for adults.
