Read 100 Books as a Classroom and Support Kids Across Canada with Classrooms Care

Your Class Can Make a Difference for Children across Canada just by Reading!

Teachers across Canada! We are challenging classrooms to help us make a difference in the lives of children and families in our communities by tracking and reading 100 books between February and April. When students in your class read 100 books, we will donate up to 100,000 books to kids who need them the most.

The Classrooms Care initiative is open to all classrooms Canada-wide through Scholastic’s Reading Club. Through the program, for each class that reads 100 books, Scholastic Canada’s Reading Club and Book Fairs divisions donates 100,000 new books to communities in need. In order to reach some of Canada’s most remote and deserving areas, the donated books are distributed in the name of both Scholastic Canada and participating classrooms through program partners. This year, Scholastic Canada will send books to children in need across Canada through their literacy partners Save the Children, Children’s Book Bank, United for Literacy, United Way Regina, CODAC NB, and Fondation pour l’alphabétisation.

Since its inception in 2005, the Classrooms Care program has provided more than 2 million books valued at $11.5 million in English and French to children across Canada. More than 80,000 classes have participated.

For the 2023 campaign, Scholastic Canada’s Classrooms Care program continues to partner with Pilkey’s “Do Good” initiative. One lucky class who completes the 100-book reading poster will win 32 surprise Dav Pilkey prize packs for their class!

In three simple steps, your classroom can make an impact on families across the country. Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Register

Teachers register their class to help us achieve our goal of donating 100,000 books to kids who need them the most. Plus, when teachers register they are automatically entered into a draw to win the Dav Pilkey Prize Pack!

Step 2: Start Reading!

Ready, set, read! Classes read 100 books by April 30, 2023 and track their progress on their tracking poster. The tracking poster is available to teachers in their February book boxes!

Step 3: Report

Teachers tell us when their class reaches their 100-book goal! Once a class has read 100 books and completed the tracking poster, they email us a photo of the poster or tag us on social media.

Once we have received your registration and confirmation of completion, we will donate books through our literacy partners to children who need them the most. We know classes will do a stellar job, so we have created a Certificate of Thanks to print and hang in the classroom! Plus, teachers can congratulate each student for their hard work and print individual student certificates.

Here are a few great ideas for your first Classrooms Care campaign:

  • Hang up the tracking poster in your classroom
  • Send home a letter to parents to let them know you are completing the 100-book challenge. One is available for download here.
  • Encourage parents and students to read books at home to count towards the 100-book goal.
  • Participate in Storyvoice.live author read-aloud events and count those books towards your class’ goal!
  • Reward your students! Download individual certificates, bookmarks, and stickers and share them with your students.

About the Do Good campaign:

In 2019, Scholastic launched the Dog Man “Do Good” campaign. Inspired by the characters and themes in Dav Pilkey’s worldwide bestselling graphic novel series, the initiative encourages readers of all ages to give back, in any way they can, and make a positive impact in their communities.

Throughout the pandemic, Dav created a series of “Learn at Home” videos to provide comfort and support to kids and families, who found themselves housebound as well. During this time, he also launched his bestselling Cat Kid Comic Club series, a groundbreaking story that incorporates various art forms, and encourages all kids to unleash their creativity and tell their own stories. Just one more way they can contribute something good to the world!

With this spirit in mind, we are proud to once again partner our Classrooms Care program with the Do Good campaign – as a reminder that reading for pleasure not only enriches the lives of students, but that this small act will also make a difference in the lives of children who don’t have the same access to books.

Help us ensure that all children across Canada have the chance to build a lifelong love of reading by registering now and inspiring your students to keep reading! For more information, visit www.scholastic.ca/classroomscare.
