Creating goals turns reading into a fun activity that your kids will look forward to in their free time. Here are five tangible family reading goals recommended by teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:3px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Goal 1: Add just one more book per night.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reading one extra book to your young child each day can have a huge impact on their language development. The more books they\u2019re exposed to, the greater their vocabulary becomes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t have a reading routine already in place? Teachers recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.scholastic.ca\/scholasticblog\/2024\/03\/18\/how-to-use-reading-time-to-bond-with-your-child\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reading one book per day together<\/a> as a great place to start!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:3px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Goal 2: Have at least one conversation about books every day.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talking about books gets kids more eager to read, and makes it a natural part of their everyday life. Ask <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.scholastic.ca\/scholasticblog\/2023\/03\/09\/simple-questions-you-can-ask-to-gauge-your-childs-current-interests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">questions about their current interests<\/a>, and be intentional about book talk. These conversations can help you pinpoint books they\u2019ll love!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:3px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Goal 3: Dive into poetry together.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Poetry can expand your child\u2019s vocabulary and is easy to memorize because of their often rhyming, lyrical structure. Sit down with a book of poems and let your child choose what appeals to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:3px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Goal 4: Host a family book night and learn more about authors.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Create a comfy spot in the house with books, and have the family read and trade their favourite stories. Showing how fun it can be to share books with loved ones will instil a love of reading in your child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also join a live read-aloud with authors on <a href=\"https:\/\/storyvoice.scholastic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Storyvoice<\/a>! This will help build a personal connection between your child and their favourite author, and help keep the reading momentum going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:3px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Goal 5: Ask more questions after story time.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The story doesn\u2019t end when you close a book. Read the same book together a few nights in a row, then ask your child questions about what you\u2019ve just read.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Questions like \u201cWhat do you think this story would sound like from another character\u2019s point of view?\u201d or \u201cClose your eyes and imagine you were there. What would you do?\u201d encourage critical thinking and can help gauge your child\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.scholastic.ca\/scholasticblog\/2023\/03\/10\/6-strategies-to-improve-reading-comprehension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reading comprehension<\/a>.
