Quality time should be more than a few minutes together, and time that will nurture you both. Reading with your child is a perfect opportunity to bond with them, while also learning more about their reading habits.

Here are four ways you can use reading time to bond with your child.

1. Mix Up the (Reading) Routine

Traditionally, families save read-aloud time for just before bed, but why not try during other parts of the day? Start the day with a breakfast storytime, or add a book during your lunchtime routine. Establishing reading routines also helps create structure for your household. The more time set aside for reading, the more likely your child is to fall in love with it.

2. Get Into Character

Make reading more fun and immerse yourselves in the book. Use silly voices for each character, exaggerate the emotions in the story, or even use props! Strengthen phonological development with books that incorporate rhyming or repetition, making reading fun and educational.

3. Ask Your Child About Their Interests

Start with the books your child is currently reading or what they want to read, and ask what they like most about the books they’ve read. This allows you to stay updated with their current interests, but also challenges your child to form their own opinions and exercise their reading comprehension. Giving your child your full attention helps build their confidence and self-esteem, and knowing you want to be in their company means the world to them.

4. Enjoy the Time You Share

Don’t worry about your child’s progress or reading level. Remember, practice makes perfect, so enjoy the story and the time you spend together. By acting as their reading role model and dedicating time to read with your child, you are setting a strong example of the importance of literacy in their life.

Trying to find the time to bond with your child can be challenging, especially with competing schedules.
