What is Ramadan?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and the first sighting of the new crescent moon, Ramadan is celebrated by the Muslim community. The month signifies the belief in which the Qur\u2019an \u2014 the religious text of Islam \u2014 was revealed to the prophet Muhammed by Allah (God).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How is it celebrated?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During Ramadan, most Muslims aged 12 or older refrain from eating and drinking between sunrise and sunset. To help get them through the day, some may have suhoor<\/em> just before dawn. Once sunset hits, families will gather together for iftar<\/em>, a large meal traditionally starting with eating dates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fasting is a reminder for Muslims to empathize with those in need, and encourages them to perform generous and charitable acts during this month. It is also a reminder for them to appreciate their own blessings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Muslims also spend a lot of time reading and praying the Qur\u2019an, with many attending services in mosques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happens after Ramadan?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the final day of Ramadan, the three-day celebration of Eid al-Fitr <\/em>begins. Known as the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast, families and friends will dress up, decorate their homes, gather together to pray, exchange gifts, and celebrate with a large feast to signify the end of their fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
